While many cities around the world are fully equipped and seem futuristic, in some places there is a lack of the basics that can make a person’s life decent. In these neighbourhoods, that we call ghettos or favelas, there is no electricity, nor is there clean water. The poor people that inhabit these places are desperate and unsafe. The idea of this project is to give them hope.
Light in every culture represents hope, safety and development so this work brings those elements to their life.
The idea of this project is giving poor people free light in their neighbourhoods at night and shadow during the day. Some of these neighbourhoods don’t have any street lights nor do they have vegetation and public spaces. This raises an issue especially in summer as there are no shadows in the entire neighbourhood to hide from the sun. It’s also completely dark a nights making the streets dangerous.
The concept is to fill the neighbourhoods with street lights containing two layers: The outer layer is made of solar cells and the inner layer is made of glowing textile. The solar cells absorb light during the day to power the textile at night. In addition to the lighting, each module can take different shapes and forms and translates on the cable. Depending on needs, changing the shapes and locations of the lights can create bigger or smaller shadows. This also offers the residents a spectacle of light and shadow.
