As Plumage
The purpose of this deisgn is reinterpreting one of Mies' modern building: Toroto dominian north tower. The prototype of the project comes from the natural configuration of plumage. In the nature, plumage is considered as the most complex integumentary structures found in vertebrates. The layering composition and the morphology of each feather insulate the birds from cold and water. The color pattern of them protect the birds from predators. Moreover, in the architecture system, shingles sharing the similar layering arrangement as plumage, in more simple and regular ways. As addition to the roof structure, they also provide an extra protection from the unpleasant temperature and rain, which is analogous to plumage.
Our project is inspired by the configuration ,morphology and coloration of plumage and sharing the similar structure meaning as shingle, with more translucent materials to insure natural light. The “feathers” layering on top of each other, creates a thick barrier for the building. Volumes and surfaces invade each other, making the boundary between interior and exterior no longer apparent.
