Dis-place-ment (shift, supplanting, translation)
Physics
1. The linear or angular distance in a given direction between a body or point and a reference position.
2. The distance of an oscillating body from its central position or point of equilibrium at any given moment.
3. The shortest distance from the initial and final positions of a point P. Thus, it is the length of an imaginary straight path, typically distinct from the path actually travelled
This project is an investigation of the relationships between body, dance and physics. The conceptual agenda focuses on the idea of displacement and its different interpretations and re-interpretations throughout the design process.
The building’s main purpose was to serve as the dc’s headquarters for city dance ensemble; a dance company native of the dc area that has a strong focus on community work.
The program consisted of a performing space (black box), administration and studios with supporting areas such as a café and open public areas.
The site was located on 15th and p, in a neighborhood right in between the 14th street and the 17th street corridors, being P a major street connector.
