The Wills Residence Remodel consisted of a custom concrete spa set into the hillside of an existing residence in Los Angeles.
The client came to us looking to create a private escape which not only provided them with a spa and lounge area, but was also a means for providing an organizational strategy for their back yard.
Governed strongly by local zoning and hillside ordinances, we developed a system of bifurcating concrete walls which wrapped the site like a ribbon in order to create a series of pocket spaces for a spa, deck, shower, and bench. In doing so, we engaged the code as a diagram for varying the heights of the walls as we moved along the site, starting with the tallest walls alonside the spa, deck and shower, and gradually peeling the structure away to create lower walls for the bench and landscaping.
In addition to the bifurcating wall system, we also developed a pixelated ground plane texture using grasses and pavers, removed an existing overhang, refinished existing wood soffits, provided new french doors leading to the yard from the study, and replastered an existing exterior wall to match the smooth trowled texture of the concrete walls.
