Renovation of the Indiana University Visitor Center

This partner project involved interviewing the manager of the Indiana University Visitor Center to discover that she envisioned a timeless, yet on trend with technology. The existing space currently bears its sad design from the 90's. My partner and I developed a concept of A Gateway to Experience IU, based on the iconic Sample Gates that welcome students onto campus. The Sample Gates are about a two minute walk from this visitor center. A gateway is not a door, but simply a supportive structure to lead someone into a new space. A gateway never closes, allowing alumni to always come back to their college stomping grounds. A gateway is welcoming to everyone and indicates possibility and new beginnings.  The circulation of the space is indicative of how students may not take a simple straight path through college, and they exit through the same gateway where they started.

We knew that our three main groups of visitors to this space, prospective students, current students, and alumni would benefit the most by interacting and sharing stories with each other, which is how we came to our concept of one multi-media interactive center. This is the focal point of the space. It serves many purposes. It welcomes the visitor, invites them to share their memories, and informs them about activities, majors, and the history of Indiana University. Most of these panels involve touch screens for a dynamic interactive experience. A few also include traditional white boards. See more details about the boards below.
