Politecnico di Milano, Milano, IT, MArch, Urban and architectural planning
The Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) aims to provide students with an advanced level of education enabling them to exercise highly qualified activities in specific areas. The educational project aims to train graduates with a Laurea Magistrale in Architecture. The programme is designed, as a whole and in its constituent parts, to provide advanced training in the field of architectural design. The programme takes a unitary form, in compliance with the EU requirements for recognising the qualification obtained.
True to the Politecnico tradition, the programme offers a training approach based on the combination of humanistic-artistic and scientific-technical components. It integrates leading cultural traditions with teaching innovations, thus reaffirming the cultural and strategic role of architecture, living quality and physical/social landscapes. It addresses issues concerning the environment, the habitability of cities and territories, and the protection and renewal of cultural assets and resources.
The programme makes use of design workshops focused on interior and landscape architecture, urban design and planning, restoration and technology design. Theory courses integrate a design experience with insights into history, theoretical research, technological developments and the study of construction techniques and contemporary architecture, with a growing emphasis on the requirements of sustainability and environmental compatibility. The training is complemented by electives, both in English and Italian, which may also be selected from outside the programme and which provide a wide choice of courses from very diverse disciplines. A particularly interesting training opportunity is provided by the numerous workshops offered, which, at different stages of the year, offer intensive design experiences focused on specific issues.
The recommended study plan called 'Architectural Design' aims to train graduates capable of developing an architectural project as a means of transforming an environment and built environment in all its formal and technical components, using the tools required to fully understand the physical, social and cultural characteristics of contemporary contexts.
The programme focuses on architectural design at every scale, and especially on the modification and regeneration of landscapes and urban settlements, researching new forms and types of contemporary living, architecture of public spaces and infrastructures, and searching for a conscious balance between new and existing architecture, paying particular attention to the requirements of environmental, social and economic sustainability and compatibility.
Hence the structured courses focus on providing and updating theoretical, methodological and operational instruments in architecture, developing a high-profile architectural designer capable of coordinating complex design operations at every scale.
Politecnico di Milano, Milano, IT, BArch, Sustainable Architecture
Numerous and widely differing subjects are offered as part of the Degree Programme: from architectural and urban design, to the history of architecture; from restoration theories and techniques, to structural design; from building technology and construction, to urban planning design; from technical physics, to sociology, geography and economics; and from mathematics to architectural drawing. With so many different subjects, integration between subjects and teaching modules is the criterion that forms the structure of the study programme. The Degree Programme makes use of a strong and easily understandable synergy between design workshops and courses – both single subject and integrated - while maintaining the independence and specific identity of the teachings of design. The latter consists of subject courses, integrated courses and a number of basic Workshops where students are expected to acquire notions related to the subject areas considered essential to their technical training and cultural maturity. Design teaching is organised into Workshops. Through applied experience, students are expected to acquire the methodological skills required to create an architectural design starting from a clear definition of the design objectives, up to the assessment of the technical feasibility of the proposed solutions, organising the various areas of knowledge acquired both inside and outside the university into a system. The multidisciplinary nature of the design is analysed in depth through a thematic design experience at the end of the programme, in the final semester, and entrusted to a group of lecturers associated with various subject areas. Students are asked to articulate, consistently with this final design experience, all of the skills acquired during the Degree Programme. The student’s curriculum is completed with an internship which, while of limited duration, is an essential opportunity for contact with the working world in professional, business and public administration settings, depending upon the student’s specific field of interest. Graduates must possess the fundamental knowledge of the subject areas in order to fully comprehend the complexity of transformation processes in the built environment. In this sense, graduates must be familiar with the literature produced in the field of architecture in its technical, scientific and humanistic forms and possess the traditional and advanced tools that will allow them to develop and communicate actions of interpretation, analysis and intervention.
