Danila Babko-Malyi

New York, NY, US

Dan holds a Masters in Architecture and Urban Design from GSAPP | Columbia University (2011) after having previously studied at Pratt Institute (B.Arch 2010). His professional work includes Merge Studio in New York where he developed computational methods for building complex facade geometries as well as developed multiple master plans for a variety of programs. Dan also worked for Manica Architects in Kansas City developing methodologies for building stadium skin systems as well as developing a parametric model that generates stadium bowls with needed inputs. Dan has taught at the University of Connecticut and the University of Kansas specializing in introducing generative design as a method of solving a design problem. Currently Dan is working for Asymptote Architecture in New York on a variety of project types advancing efficiency and design process through computation.

The work explores architecture as a social and formal investigation of all scales, from city to furniture, using algorithmic design methodologies. The intent of approaching design problems through algorithms is to allow a bottom-up design process of building small scale relationships to guide and investigate larger scale emergent order phenomenons. This investigation leads to an iterative decision process of solving a design problem without preconceiving a prescriptive solution. The inspiration behind this work is driven by the study of math and biology to rethink spatial, material, structural, and social ideas.
