About

Mauricio Lopez - Founder and President at ml studio, inc

Mauricio moved from Colombia to New York City searching for experiences and inspiration. With his architectural and art backgrounds he started to explore his passion for lighting with the award winning team at Cosentini Lighting Design, where he worked in a wide range of projects including the New York City School Construction Authority, the EnCana Headquarters in Calgary, Canada, designed by Foster + Partners in collaboration with Zeidler Partnership and Gensler, and the urban campus tower for Roosevelt University on Wabash Street in Chicago.

In 2011 Mauricio founded ml studio, inc, a lighting design and art practice specializing in hospitality, retail, residential, institutional and high-end corporate projects. His creativity, technical knowledge and management experience are a rare combination of skills that he applies to any design, such as restaurants and meeting rooms at the Grand Hyatt Istanbul Hotel with GKV architects, or the New Beauty Apothecary at Harrods, London with HMKM Architects. His architectural background includes the position of City Planning Director (Armenia, Colombia), during the reconstruction process after an earthquake that almost completely destroyed this city with a population of 400,000 people in 1999.

Mauricio's award winning artwork has been commissioned for public art installations including the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Arts for Transit, as well as solo and group art shows in the U.S. and Colombia. The diverse experience and backgrounds in architecture, art and design, let ml studio bring a holistic approach to any project, formulating creative design solutions that are socially and environmentally conscious. No matter if it is lighting or art, ml studio approaches them with creative sensitivity.

'urbancanvas', Award

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, First Deputy Mayor Patricia E. Harris, Buildings Commissioner Robert D. LiMandri, Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kate D. Levin and Public Design Commission Executive Director Jackie Snyder today announced the four winning designs of the urbancanvas Design Competition, a contest to help beautify New York City’s urban landscape with art at construction sites. Supported by the Rockefeller Foundation’s grant to the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, the competition challenged professional artists and designers to create artwork to be placed on temporary protective structures at construction sites – like mesh screens and fencing – that can be eyesores for New Yorkers. In addition, the Department of Buildings is incorporating its new standard construction information panel as part of this initiative, which provides an architectural rendering of the new building as well as information about the project. The winning designs of the competition, evaluated by a jury and voted on by the public which cast nearly 4,000 votes online, are: “BREATHING_WALL_UC,” by Monika Bravo; “Color Mesh,” by Mauricio Lopez; “My Urban Sky,” by Jen Magathan; and “Green Screen,” by Corinne Ulmann.
