Hilary is an architect and social-impact designer specialized in sustainability, combining exemplary design with holistic building performance. As an Associate Principal and Sustainability Integration Leader at Mithun, she works on affordable multifamily affordable housing, resiliency planning and the pursuit of regenerative, carbon-neutral projects. A background in environmental science and community development informs her design approach of working with local stakeholders in a participatory process to achieve place based, bioregional solutions.
Prior to joining Mithun, Hilary worked in New Mexico as a LEED Project Manager and Architectural Designer on a wide variety of project types including higher education, laboratory, civic, urban design projects, as well as deconstruction/material reuse initiatives. In 2014 she was selected as a Rose Architectural Fellow and served as Design Director at First Community Housing, furthering their mission to develop high-quality, healthy, green affordable housing for low-income communities.
Hilary is a LEED AP BD+C, SEED Evaluator, Living Building Challenge Ambassador and Fitwel Ambassador. She holds a BA in Environmental Studies and a Master of Architecture, as well as a Graduate Certificate in Preservation and Regionalism focusing on Adaptive Reuse and Natural Materials.
Recognition of her work includes Exhibition Winner: Drylands Design Competition; Natural Talent Design Competition; ‘Best in Show’ at the NM Green Built Tour. Hilary has been named a Heritage Scholar, Udall Scholar and an Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellow. She currently serves on the Advisory Board for Fitwel and the Bay Area Living Future Collaborative.
Inspired by the outdoors, she can be found cycling daily on road and dirt, practicing yoga, and backpacking in wilderness.
MITHUN, San Francisco , Associate Principal & Sustainability Integration Leader
Hilary is Project Architect on Maceo May Veterans Apartments located on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay, an all-electric, modular construction six story buildnig which will provide 105 affordable homes to formerly homeless Veterans. The building provides studios, 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom apartments and community-serving spaces. The approximately 112,000 sq.ft. building will be built utilizing off-site modular construction methods above a concrete podium on an urban infill site of .73 acres. The building design supports the larger TIDA master plan vision: to create a family of new neighborhoods in San Francisco that are an exemplar of sustainable and resilient neighborhood development, set within a framework of public parks and natural open spaces that will be a resource and an amenity for the entire Bay Area.
Hilary served as Project Manager on Resilient by Design: Bay Area Challenge Bay Area Challenge which launched with a call to action to bring together local residents, community organizations, public officials and local, national, and international experts to develop innovative solutions that will strengthen the Bay Area region's resilience to sea level rise, severe storms, flooding, and earthquakes. The final design concepts are meant to inspire, catalyze action, and push us along the path to a more resilient future with multi-benefit designs that combine infrastructure, social equity and local ecology. The Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellowship partners early-career architects with community-based organizations to direct the skills and passions of the architects in the service of under-served communities. The Fellowship is designed to promote the value of quality design and healthy green building in affordable housing and encourages architects to become lifelong leaders in community development.
• Coordinate green building efforts that aim to go beyond LEED Platinum, including pioneering efforts in the latest performance based metrics: the Living Building Challenge and the WELL Building Standard.
• Research healthy materials, unit design, affordability by design, urban agriculture, low-impact development, net-zero energy, and regenerative design across our portfolio.
• Oversee grant-funding to support the connection between green building and health.
• Provide in-house architectural design capacity, supporting concept planning, rehab and development feasibility analysis.

- Co-taught a graduate level architecture studio which investigated the potential creation of a high-performance building district (District 2030) and an innovation campus. By retrofitting and up-cycling underutilized buildings, students re-imagined existing structures to allow for dynamic and sustainable ecological and economic incubation into the future.
