I am currently an architectural intern for Carlson Veit Architects in Salem, Oregon. In my brief time here, I have worked on numerous projects, the largest of which were Lithia's Honda, BMW, and Volkswagen dealerships completed at the beginning of 2015. I am actively pursuing my architect's license; as I near completion of my IDP hours, I have begun taking the ARE.
As a jack-of-all-trades, I have experience in general construction, framing, concrete work, plumbing, tiling, furniture construction and finish carpentry, landscaping, irrigation, and lighting. These hands-on skills supplement my design experience and help me to find efficient design solutions to complex problems. I have also found that my construction knowledge translates into clear and concise construction documents, something that is greatly appreciated by contractors.
I spent several years working for Fifth Season Landscape Design and Construction, a two-person company (at the time). Working for Fifth Season helped me gain valuable experience in the business side of the design industry, especially finding the balance between great design and affordability.
I have extensive experience preparing architectural presentations, both hand-drawn and digital. My preference is to work digitally, using AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, Photoshop, and Illustrator; however, I also have some experience with watercolors and can effectively communicate ideas with hand-drawn sketches.
Additional hobbies include digital photography and photo manipulation, furniture design, and the occasional t-shirt and tattoo design. More of my work can be seen at http://society6.com/RenderedUseful
Carlson Veit Architects, Salem, OR, US, Architectural Intern
As an architectural intern, I have been fortunate to work on a wide range of project types and sizes in the past few years, from small tenant improvements to ground-up car dealerships. One great benefit of working for a small firm is that I am frequently involved in all phases of the project. . As an example of this, I will describe a recent project and my role in its completion: we were tasked with designing a campus for the relocation of the Salem Honda, BMW, and Volkswagen dealerships. As the project lead, I accompanied the architect of record at all client meetings and conference calls. This particular project required regular contact with the owners, building users, and corporate designers to ensure that all brand standards were met for the buildings. I completed construction documents for the site and all three buildings, facilitated drawing coordination with structural/civil engineers, MEP and fire sprinkler/alarm subs, as well as the city for permitting and each of the store's corporate design team for approval. Throughout the CA phase I reviewed submittals, evaluated substitution requests, answered RFI's, issued revisions and ASI's, attended regular construction observation meetings, and completed punch lists for project completion. Our success on this project led to the procurement of several other car dealership projects; and for me personally, this project provided me a valuable wealth of experience.
Fifth Season LLC, Junction City, OR, US, Designer/Builder
My work with Fifth Season Landscape Design and Construction covered a wide variety of tasks and abilities, from pre-design through construction. On a typical project, I created base plans from scratch, developed schematic designs, developed designs into construction documents, and created and installed architectural elements in addition to plantings, landscape lighting, and irrigation. I frequently coordinated with subcontractors for metal fabrications, electrical installations, and natural gas lines for outdoor fire features. Using SketchUp, Revit, and the Adobe Creative Suite to generate visual representations of our designs helped the company procure many projects.
