About

I'm a front end web designer with a passion for muqarnas. Muqarnas are an Islamic geometric space-enclosing system. Historically it was used in domes, portals and on minarets. The Alhambra utilizes muqarnas.

My work with muqarnas explores new forms of domes, flat ceilings and spiral staircase ceilings. These latter forms, spiral staircase ceilings are not found in the architectural record.

My entry into the world of muqarnas was made possible by the Masters thesis of Dr. Mamoun Sakkal. Dr. Sakkal has moved on to the world of designing Arabic fonts and other beautiful work, while I find myself, tortoise-like, slowly carrying the muqarnas baton.

Unlike traditional muqarnas blocks, the muqarnas system as I understood it from Mamoun can be conceived in a manner that is both simpler and more rigorous. This lends a certain inevitability to the develdevelopment of new forms.
