About

Employment

The Stewart Perry Company, Inc., Birmingham, AL, US, Intern

This internship was part of Auburn's Urban Studio (see below). Stewart Perry is a General Contracting firm located on the outskirts of Birmingham, AL. Their team works with many large chains such as Target and Publix, yet still acquire smaller local projects.

During my time as an intern at Stewart Perry I worked alongside contractors and project managers in the construction industry. I was given the unique opportunity to view the industry from a different angle. My tasks included: updating drawing sets, locating and organizing files, product research, calling subcontractors, site visits, etc. I was also given the privilege of designing the entry portfolios for Stewart Perry's entries in the ABC (Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc.) Design Excellence Awards. Two of the three entries won 1st place in their respective categories, and the third won 2nd place.

U R B A N S T U D I O :

"The Urban Studio has an ongoing commitment to teaching, intern partnerships with local architects, and studio work focused in the city of Birmingham. In addition, Our Small Town Design Initiative Program has worked with over 65 small towns and communities across the state. We are helping communities identify those positive assets that can be the basis of a sound master plan for physical and economic vitality - creating distinctive opportunities for building higher quality of life, broader prospects in the community and - a better place to live."

Education

Auburn University, Auburn, AL, US, BArch, Architecture

"The Design Studio is a rare academic environment. In studio, one develops ideas, projects, and self by way of experimentation, collaboration, and expression. The Design Studio embodies a fragile balance between many personal spheres that overlap to create a series of dynamic relationships. It is only when equal respect is paid to all that the Studio environment can operate to its full potential. Without this balance, this equality and respect, the Studio environment can become unhealthy...

Whether one agrees or disagrees with another’s belief, the Studio is a place that guarantees the right to express that belief without persecution, so long as it (the belief or idea) is respectful to others beliefs...

It should be recognized that courses outside of studio (such as seminars, lectures, and off campus experiences) offer unique and valuable opportunities for learning, growth, and experience. The more experiences and knowledge one gains outside of Studio directly affects the Studio environment by way of allowing more connections to be made, and thus enriching the Architecture Program as a whole. Within the context of the learning objectives of a course or assignment, we have the right to establish our own research agendas, and expect full faculty support...

A healthy studio environment that is orderly, safe, and free from toxins (whether physical, social or cultural) is crucial to the development of a studio space. Just as our bodies function better while healthy, a Design studio functions better while healthy..."

"The Bachelor of Interior Architecture program is one that students apply for during their second year of the Architecture program. At the end of five years and two summers of study, the ARIA student receives a Bachelor of Interior Architecture degree and a Bachelor of Architecture degree. The Interior Architecture program has a separate admissions process in addition to the same basic admissions requirements as the Architecture program since the students are pursuing both degrees concurrently."
