In Tulane’s rigorous, five-year Masters of Architecture program, we were taught the fundamentals of how architecture can engage real challenges in society. The school of architecture helps mold a new generation of leaders to make positive contributions and social change through design. The School of Architecture is unique in the way we have embraced the creative potential associated with the challenges and opportunities of rebuilding the social, physical, and economic fabric of New Orleans. Fundamentally ingrained in community engagement, Tulane allowed me to work with community groups, build actual structures in under-developed neighborhoods, develop a vision for the future, partner with non-for-profit agencies, and design buildings that will serve a noble purpose. Ultimately, we garnered a deep comprehension of the relevance of connecting our skills with pressing community and global issues.

Gordon Summer Travel Fellowship, 1st Place

The Gordon Summer Fellowship offers grants to one male and one female Newcomb-Tulane College student for innovative summer projects designed for intellectual and personal growth. The grant is offered on a competitive basis each spring, and students awarded the grant money will use it during the following summer. Preference will be given to those students whose plans have substantial intellectual and/or academic merit, whose goals are clearly defined, and whose budgets are sound.

I spent the summer of 2011 living in Shanghai, China, analyzing the critical issues of dense urban populations, sustainability, and affordable housing. I conducted a university-wide lecture on research November 11, 2011.
