raumlaborberlin, Berlin, Student Architect

raumlaborberlin is a network, a collective of 8 trained architects who have come together in a collaborative work-structure. We work at the intersection of architecture, city planning, art and urban intervention. We address in our work city and urban renewal as a process. We are attracted to difficult urban locations. Places torn between different systems, time periods or planning ideologies, that can not adapt. Places that are abandoned, left over or in transition that contains some relevance for the processes of urban transformations. These places are our experimentation sites. They offer untapped potential which we try to activate. This opens new perspectives for alternative usage patterns, collective ideals, urban diversity and difference.

For our projects, we form tailored teams of interdisciplinary experts. City residents are also specialists. No one knows better in each respective situation than those who have to deal with the places on a day to day basis. Thus we can gain valuable information about the history, fears, desires, existential needs, as well as deficits, that exists like an invisible network over every spatial situation. We forge active alliances between local actors and external experts. Thus we discover new areas of action and open new fields of experimentation, whose possibilities we test and examine collectively.

Education

Bergen School of Architecture, MArch, M.Arch

Bergen School of Architecture or BAS (Norwegian: Bergen Arkitekt Skole) is a private and academically independent school which trains architects, located in Bergen, Norway.

BAS offers two master degree programs: Master of Architecture and Master of Architecture with specialization in Landscape. In the Norwegian context, these two programs stand as alternative programs to those offered by the two public architecture schools in Norway (AHO in Oslo and NTNU in Trondheim). BAS programs are accredited by the European Union. [1] BAS is protected by the National Norwegian Law of Alternative Private Education and receives much of its financial support from the Norwegian government.

BAS was formally founded in 1986 by the initiative of Arch. Prof. Svein Hatløy and the support of the Bergen Association of Architects. S. Hatløy functioned as the academic and administrative Principle until August 31st 2007. Architect and city planer Marianne Skjulhaug took over S.Hatløy as the school's academic and administrative Principle on September 1st, 2007.

The school has approximately 150 students divided in 5 grades. The 5-year-long master degree programs are divided in two cycles. The first cycles ends by an examination of the works the students have done in the first three grades. The approval of this examination gives the students the right to continue on the second cycle. Even though the school does not offer Bachelor degrees, the approved first cycle at BAS usually is equivalent to a Bachelor of Architecture degree in the EU system. The second cycle at BAS consists of three full-time thematic semester courses and a final 7-months-long diploma project.

The University of Melbourne, MArch, M.Architecture

he University of Melbourne introduced Australia's first studies in architecture in the 1860s. ABP established the first full-time architecture course in 1927. Since then, courses in other disciplines of the built and natural environment have followed and we now train architects, construction managers, quantity surveyors, property professionals, landscape architects, urban planners, urban designers, and workplace planners and designers. As the Faculty has grown it has embraced new modes of delivery, course innovation and outlook. As one of the largest and best resourced schools of built environment and design in Australia, we have an enviable teaching and research record.

Under the leadership of our Dean, Professor Tom Kvan, the Faculty will see the implementation of the Melbourne Model initiatives including the introduction of the Bachelor of Environments. The Faculty's undergraduate teaching will be concentrated in this new degree. The Faculty will introduce the Melbourne School of Design in 2008. This is the next step in the evolution of teaching in the built environments disciplines at the University and will encompass professional entry graduate programs, professional development programs as well as graduate research degrees.
