Ishaan Barrett is a Columbia University sophomore majoring in Urban Studies and Architecture, dedicated to advancing social justice and historical preservation in city environments. He is focused on addressing local and national disparities through research in sustainable urban development. Columbia University, New York, IRCPL Summer Fellow
The Institute for Religion, Culture, and Public Life Undergraduate Summer Fellowship supports summer research for undergraduates with a strong interest in the study of religion and/or secularism. Funding was awarded for research into the religionization of public spaces in Washington, DC in a post-pandemic city. The project will analyze how DC mobilizes religion to transform communal spaces into spiritual areas and the way the city operationalizes placemaking in the process.
Columbia Daily Spectator, New York, Columnist
Contributes a bi-weekly column on issues of spatial justice called "Space and Society: Architecting Change for Social Justice." Explores the relationship between built space, social justice, and civil and political rights. Works collaboratively with the Opinion section at the Spectator to generate new ideas for articles that remain current, nuanced, and responsive.

The Eric H. Holder Jr. Initiative for Civil and Political Rights Research Fellows program offers rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors the opportunity to pursue justice-related research outside of the classroom. The Initiative fosters scholarly inquiry, policy debate, and public engagement that draws on the principles of the Core. By combining public policy, history, and urban studies, my research combines a social justice and legal approach to sustainable policy.
Barnard-Columbia Urban Review, New York, Editor-In-Cheif
Appointed as one of the new Editor in Chiefs of the Barnard-Columbia Urban Review (BCUR), the first undergraduate journal in the country focused exclusively on research in interdisciplinary urbanism and urban studies. Spearheads the editorial and public-facing elements of the journal alongside members of the board and editorial teams throughout the year.
