About

I am Lorenzo Maritan, a passionate architect with a deep interest in exploring the relationship between space and human interaction within the built environment.

With a solid academic background and diverse professional experience, I have developed strong skills in conceptual design, integrated planning, and project management. My academic journey began at the Politecnico di Torino, where I not only immersed myself in architectural theory but also worked as a teaching assistant in design courses. I later completed a double degree master's program between Politecnico di Torino and Tsinghua University in Beijing, a unique experience that expanded my understanding of cultural influences on architecture. My thesis explored the interaction between human behavior and the environment, examining how these relationships vary across cultures.

I am also a registered architect in Italy, which complements my international experience and gives me a broad foundation to approach diverse architectural challenges. One of my most notable achievements was winning a design competition for the redevelopment of silos in Buenos Aires, a project focused on food production, public awareness, and reactivating public space.

My technical expertise includes proficiency in AutoCAD, Rhino, and Revit, which I use to bring conceptual ideas to life through precise and buildable solutions. I am deeply motivated by the chance to design spaces that go beyond functionality, aiming to inspire and enrich the communities they serve. I believe architecture holds the power to improve lives and shape sustainable, inclusive communities.

Professionally, I have had the opportunity to work in Italy and Belgium, gaining exposure to different architectural approaches and cultural perspectives. I have collaborated with international teams and value the diversity of ideas and perspectives that emerge in these environments. I am fluent in Italian, English, and French, which allows me to communicate effectively with colleagues and clients from diverse backgrounds.

Looking ahead, I am excited to start a new chapter of my professional journey in New York, a vibrant and stimulating city. I am eager to embrace new challenges, contribute to the dynamic architectural scene, and push the boundaries of sustainable, socially responsible design.

Employment

Freelance architect, Milan, IT, Project Leader

As an independent architect, I have had the opportunity to work on a wide array of projects, from apartment renovations and urban studies to design competitions and comprehensive urban analysis. My independent journey, which began during the challenges of the COVID pandemic, has allowed me to merge my creative vision with practical solutions while building a close network of collaborators. A particularly rewarding project was the redevelopment of the silos in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I had the chance to explore innovative concepts and expand the boundaries of architectural practice.

My master's thesis examined how human relationships are shaped by the surrounding environment, emphasizing the interdependence between culture and architecture. This academic background, coupled with my experience as a finalist in the Fino Mornasco Middle School competition and as a runner-up in Europan 16, underscores my commitment to creating meaningful and context-sensitive designs.

My design philosophy is rooted in the belief that architecture should enhance the quality of life by creating spaces that respond to both functional needs and the surrounding environment. I approach each project as a unique opportunity for research, experimentation, and personal growth. Whether transforming an attic into a contemporary living area or designing outdoor environments that blend seamlessly with nature, I focus on creating sustainable, human-centered designs that positively impact the community.

Throughout my career, I have gained valuable experience in architectural firms while maintaining a commitment to my personal research projects. This balance allows me to continue exploring innovative ideas and approaches, further enriching my architectural practice. My passion lies in fostering collaborations, advocating for sustainable practices, and using architecture as a catalyst for positive change.

Frame Architects, Bruxelles, BE, Project Architect

During my tenure as a Project Architect at Frame Architects, I had the opportunity to lead and manage a diverse range of architectural projects, from conception to completion, in an environment that values independence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and organizational efficiency.

For instance, I led the renovation of a 3-story building in Brussels, where I managed the entire project lifecycle—from design development to construction oversight—ensuring the client’s vision was fully realized. My role in converting a townhouse into apartments emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. By integrating insights from architecture, engineering, and interior design, we created functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces. Additionally, the REPER Complex project in Brussels allowed me to showcase my project management skills, efficiently coordinating timelines and resources to ensure smooth project progression.

My involvement in the construction of a backyard studio in Etterbeek highlighted my adaptability, as I navigated unexpected challenges and delivered a high-quality final product. Furthermore, designing a new house in Ninove enabled me to apply my interdisciplinary background, incorporating sustainable design principles and client preferences to create a harmonious space that met both functional and environmental needs.

Throughout these experiences, I was responsible for translating client requirements into innovative, community-engaging architectural designs, preparing technical documentation, and conducting site visits to monitor construction progress. I also incorporated sustainable practices, focusing on energy efficiency and environmentally responsible materials to promote a healthier built environment.

These projects have not only deepened my passion for architecture but have also equipped me with a diverse and valuable skill set that I am eager to apply to future endeavors.

Des Art, Arona, IT, Design Architect

During my tenure as a Design Architect at Des Arts, a prominent interior design firm, I had the opportunity to contribute to a diverse range of projects, from luxury residential renovations to historical restorations. My role allowed me to blend creativity with technical precision, working closely with clients and multidisciplinary teams to ensure both the aesthetic and practical success of our designs.

I played a pivotal role in the design process, from conceptualization to execution, developing innovative concepts that met clients’ needs while respecting budgetary and technical constraints. For instance, leading the renovation of the Luxury Mansion in Lesa, I seamlessly integrated luxurious elements such as the pool into the exterior space, balancing beauty with functionality. Similarly, restoring an 18th-century farmhouse in Angera required careful attention to both historical preservation and modern comforts.

In addition to my creative contributions, I ensured the technical feasibility of each project by collaborating with engineers and contractors. My ability to assess materials and construction methods helped us translate beautiful designs into reality. Furthermore, I maintained open communication with clients throughout, refining designs based on their feedback and building strong relationships that fostered successful project outcomes.

By overseeing project timelines and creating detailed documentation, I ensured that every project—from the renovation of Antonelli’s Palace in Arona to a luxury flat in Arenzano—was executed with precision. My passion for crafting functional, aesthetically pleasing spaces has deepened my appreciation for architecture’s transformative power.
