About

As founder and design principal of David Prendergast Architects and Prendergast Laurel Architects, I have been involved in all aspects of the profession from proposal-writing, through conceptual design, design development, construction documents and construction.  As owner of a firm, I have overseen all business affairs including marketing, invoicing, contract-writing, consultant coordination, financial planning, payroll.  This has given me a good grasp of the business of architecture. As a decades-long practitioner of architecture in New York City, I have a deep knowledge of the City’s codes, zoning laws, required approvals and filings.

My firm was responsible for the design of a series of new public buildings and renovations in the New York City area.  In addition to residential and commercial projects, our work has encompassed public, educational, and cultural architecture. Clients included the New York Public Library, Brooklyn Public Library, NYC Department of Design and Construction, NYC Parks and Recreation, Economic Development Corporation, City University of New York, NYC College of Technology, Fire Department City of New York, PS1 Museum, the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts. The firm has won several design awards and its work has been published in Architectural Record and The New York Times.

Employment

Pfeiffer Partners, New York, NY, US, Senior Project Architects

At Pfeiffer Partners, my role as senior architect has ranged from design architect for an entire project to the senior team member responsible for design development and detailing of the building massing, structure and envelope construction. I have led a team to develop and document wall sections, fenestration and curtainwall, major public and circulation spaces, exterior and site areas. I have always “drawn”, developing my ideas in free-hand sketching, AutoCAD, Sketchup and Revit. My role has also been to manage the consultant team for structural, mechanical and electrical systems, civil engineering, landscape, acoustic, and other engineering specialties. For several years I was the CA architect for the $65 million Brooklyn College Tow Performing Arts Center.
