About

I'm a recent graduate of University of Washington's 3-year Masters of Architecture program with a focus on acoustic architectural design, form-active design, quantitative design, and healthcare. My thesis, Acoustic Spatial Design Methodology and its Application in Health Environments, has been my primary focus for the past year and I could not be more proud of the work I have put in. I have an undergraduate degree in Architectural Engineering from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo where I learned the practice of structural engineering and its intersections with architectural design. I'm looking to start my career and bring all of my passions together at once to find unconventional ways to approach design challenges.

Employment

LMN Architects, Seattle, WA, US, Architectural Intern

I worked as an intern at LMN Architects after the summer of my first year of graduate school. I loved working at a big firm in Seattle and had the opportunity to understand part of the reality of what it takes to build on the University of Washington campus. I worked on a mixed-use education and office building that will be replacing an older business building on the UW campus. With my team, I was able to create a convincing argument for a shared storage system between education departments and present my findings directly to the client. I learned so much during my time at LMN and I can't wait for my next learning opportunity.

Education

University of Washington at Seattle, Seattle, WA, US, MArch, Architecture

In my time at the University of Washington, I had to quickly change my mode of thought from what I learned in my undergraduate degree in engineering to appreciate the intricacies and vernacular of design. In learning about the built environment of Seattle, I slowly found my specialty of computational design and also pursued many courses in theory and history, focusing on phenomenology, worldbuilding, and narrative.
My thesis, Acoustic Spatial Design Methodology and its Application in Health Environments, allowed me to combine my passions for computational design and an acoustic temperament I built after years of studying music. I look forward to using all these skills as I move forward in my career.

California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo, CA, US, Bachelors, Architectural Engineering

I pursued a degree in architectural engineering to find a way to combine my love of physics and architecture and start my design career understanding the limitations of building. During my time at Cal Poly, I focused on form-active design, pushing the limitations of concrete and understanding the way to optimize efficiency and minimize material use through form.

Awards

L. Arnie Chinn Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund Recipient, Scholarship

This fund is established in honor and memory of L. Arnie Chinn (Leslie Arnold Chinn), who was born in Seattle on December 31, 1953, the son of Les and Gladys Chinn. Arnie attended Franklin High School in Seattle and received his B.A. in Architecture and his B.S.A. in Fine Arts from the University of Washington, both in 1978. Arnie Chinn began his career as a designer for the Seattle firm of Terry Draheim Associates. He also worked at Business Space Design, where his projects included the Seattle Repertory Theater's Bagley Wright Theater at the Seattle Center. In 1982, after a period with Forma Design, he moved to New York City. He lived in London for nearly a year in 1983 before returning to New York and joining the firm of John Saladino. He established the New York office of Forma where he was Director of Design until founding his own design firm, L. Arnie Chinn Studio, in 1988. Arnie passed away on March 8, 1994, at the age of 40. He loved the University of Washington and his profession, and the donors to the scholarship fund hope to provide financial assistance to students who share the passion he demonstrated for great design.
