My name is Sara Suri.
I was born and raised in India. I lived in Singapore for four years for my undergrad. I’ve been in New York for nearly three years now as I’m heading towards graduation in May 2021. I went to Lasalle College of the Arts, Singapore and received a Foundation Certificate in Visual Arts and BA(honors) in Interior Design. I wanted to pursue my masters in New York as a I wanted to diversify my spatial knowledge. Singapore in contrast to New York is a newer country and is very futuristic. Singapore as a city has been building and evolving on a blank slate, while New York has layers of history, codes and regulations which has honed my architectural knowledge and helped learn about the two ends of the spectrum.
I’ve done an Internship at CP Architects, New Delhi for a summer and attended the summer intensive course in constructed environments at Parsons before applying to the M.Arch program in New York.
A prominent memory I have from my childhood, is of my father who had no formal knowledge of architecture, working on his dream project of designing and owning a luxury resort. Unfortunately, he passed away soon after, and was not there to accept the multiple awards that the hotel won later on for its portuguese inspired architecture. As a child, I understood little of the technicalities and plans that he would draw, but what I could absorb was the excitement, passion, and contentment he exuded while working on the resort. I felt it each time I visited him in his office, and every time I visited the beautiful and well-designed space, thereafter. This sparked my initial interest in spatial design and architecture.
My favorite architects are Moshe Safdie, Shigeru Ban, David Chipperfield, Balkrishna Doshi and WOHA architects. My favorite building or architectural design is the Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay in Singapore.
A fun fact about me is that I performed at the 2010 Common Wealth Games closing ceremony, it was dance performance which was 28 songs long.

The human body is often an inspiration and a metaphor in architecture at all levels; but these metaphors are incomplete. My project explores women’s menstrual health as an inspiration for architecture at the physical, programmatic, and political level. It is about transforming the stigma that exists around menstrual health which is mostly due to cultural taboos, lack of education and period poverty. I’m proposing a manufacturing space which is inspired by a precedent in rural India to manufacture low-cost sustainable sanitary pads in order to educate, create employment and spread awareness. The low duty manufacturing facilitates lower costs in comparison to the mass produced products.
