Awards

Judith Lee Stronach Travel Scholarship, Scholarship

The Judith Lee Stronach Travel Scholarship encouraged learning and experiencing new places and cultures with an underlying mission of social responsibility. I applied for the scholarship with the intent of understanding more about the power of architecture and its impact on regeneration efforts in communities victimized by a natural disaster. I had seen first hand the effects of natural disasters when visiting the communities of Tohoku, Japan, and wanted to learn about innovative regeneration efforts from the responses of other countries. Upon receiving the scholarship I was able to volunteer for Bahia Beach Construction, a construction company that provided a truly sustainable form of aid to those victimized by the earthquake by providing locals with construction training using local bamboo.
