About

Matthew currently works at EDG Architecture and Engineering, and has an M.Arch from Pratt Institute and a BFA in Interior Design from the New York School of Interior Design. He has three years of work experience as a Project Manager at 2NYADesign Inc., a boutique architectural design firm. In addition, Matthew interned at an architectural and lighting design firm, Taylor and Miller Architecture. Matthew held multiple student leadership positions at the GAUD: M.Arch Student Representative, Graduate Assistant, and Editor of Tarp Digital Magazine. Matthew also held two research positions at the GAUD; Project Manager and Research Design Assistant at the Center for Experimental Structures, and Robotics Design Researcher at the Consortium for Research and Robotics. Matthew’s group placed first in the 2020 ULI Student Competition, and with two other students, won first place in the 2019 Sukkah Design Competition at Pratt, which was constructed in Tribeca Park, New York City.

Employment

EDG Architecture | Engineering, New York, NY, US, Synthesis Intern

Research and design advanced fabrication and design methods for the Synthesis’ architectural product line. Assist the EDG architecture department.

The Center for Experimental Structures, Brooklyn, NY, US, Research Assistant & Project Manager of HyperSurface

While at Pratt I worked in one of the advanced research design labs called the Center for Experimental Structures under the Direction of Dr. Haresh Lalvani. While working there I managed a project called HyperSurface which consisted of leading a group of two grad and three undergrad students. The project is a sculpture of a minimal surface which uses the typical "contour model" building method to construct it, but at a 1 to 1 scale. 6 mm Alucobond is laser cut by the metal fabrication company Milgo Bufkin and the pieces are transported to Pratt for assembly. The goal of the project is to prove the capability of building a complex geometry without form-work. Instead we have integrated the assembly logic and structure into each laser cut piece embedding cylindrical pegs inside the sculpture which act as both assembly instructions as well a rigid connection between layers. This project is still in process, but is expected to be installed in the Summer of 2021.

Dec 2018 - Jul 2020

The Consortium for Research and Robotics, Brooklyn, NY, US, Research Assistant & Project Manager of HyperSurface

While at Pratt Institute I took advantage of working at The Consortium for Research and Robotics where I had the opportunity to research and work on various advanced fabrication & design methodologies. At the CRR I gained increased levels of experience with laser cutters, vacuum forming machines, 3D printers, CNC machines and ABB Industrial Robots. I also had the opportunity to expose myself to a higher level of modeling and programming using Python and Grasshopper as plugins to Rhino. One project I lead at the CRR was a concrete panel design project where we used the ABB Industrial Robot to draw in sand making novel designs, which we later hardened into a mold and cast concrete over. Examples of this project can be seen in my work sample attached to my resume.

Dec 2018 - Jul 2020

Taylor and Miller Architecture and Design, New York, NY, US, Graduate Intern

While at Pratt I completed a two month full time internship with the Architecture and Lighting Design Firm called Taylor and Miller Architecture. I contributed to a range of responsibilities from drafting to rendering to prototyping custom details and lighting conditions. When prototyping these custom details and conditions a range of techniques and mediums were used from hand modeling to electric tools to 3D printing.

Jun 2019 - Aug 2019

2NYADesign Inc., New York, NY, US, Project Manager

At 2NYADesign Inc, a boutique architectural design company, I led projects under the supervision of the firm’s principal. Typically, the projects were apartment fit outs of private residences and my responsibilities ranged from client communication, to drafting construction documents including Building Management and DOB approvals, in addition to managing the contract bid process and construction administration.

Awards

2020 ULI Hines Student Competition, 1st Place

While at Pratt I participated in the national 2020 ULI Hines Student Competition. My group, made up of myself, a Master's of City Planning student from Pratt and 3 Masters of Real Estate students from Columbia worked together to win first place. The project was located on the intersection of four neighborhoods in Miami most prominent of them being the Wynwood Art District. In addition, the Brightline train tracks ran through the site and a new station is being proposed there. The prompt requested proposals for a mix used development that would include a transportation hub as well as unite the various adjacent neighborhoods. La Mezcla, or the mix in Spanish, was selected as the winner and was recognized for its resilient and equitable approach to re-zoning and masterplanning the neighborhood, as well as having an enticing design that both promoted sustainability and comfort. In addition, La Mezcla was recognized for the idea that it could be considered a precedent for how all of Florida and the east coast make their shore lines and communities more resilient to natural disasters. This project can be viewed in my work sample following my resume.

2020

JCP Sukkah Design Competition, 1st Place

While at Pratt I participated in a student competition sponsored by the Jewish Community Project of NYC. My group, made up of myself and two other graduate students, won the competition and were sponsored to build and install our design in Tribeca Park. This project required us to design, present and build a Sukkah, in addition to managing logistics and installing the project on site. The project is made of 1/2" plywood, wood 2 x 6's for the vertical members and wood 2 x 4's for the base with different metal fasteners for the various connections. The plywood pieces were CNC'd, while all the 2 x 4's and 2 x 6's were cut by hand mixing modern fabrication techniques with more traditional techniques. The pieces were pre-assembled into parts that could fit into a box truck for moving it to the site and easy installation. Prior to moving the pieces our group completed a practice installation in order to modify any parts as needed. The project was successfully installed in Tribeca Park in October 2019 and was there for over two weeks to celebrate the Holiday of Sukkot. This project can be seen in my work sample following my resume.
