Awards

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award, 1st Place

Sai Liang and Melissa Gavidia won for their spring 2019 project, “Tapered Tiers.”
According to the award committee, this project attempted to activate means of inclusion at a range of scales, from urban to architectural.
Tapered Tiers is a 6 story, 159-micro unit, mixed use housing project in Leimert Park. This project provides affordable housing for those “in between” people who do not qualify for government assistance, yet, cannot afford local housing. The micro units of Tapered Tiers create a sense of community by exploiting the concept of social connectivity in order to connect inhabitants with, not just one another, but also with the surrounding neighborhood.
