Shiftboston-Barge, Nomination
SHIFTboston challenged architects, installation artists, designers and landscape architects professionals and students to design an experience installation on a barge in Boston’s Fort Point Channel. Competitors are asked to develop a concept which might include one or all of the following components: recycled/recyclable materials, water, plants and perhaps digitally fabricated parts. We would like designers to create a unique SENSORY EXPERIENCE for barge visitors by experimenting with a variety of interesting materials and applications in order to provide a TACTILE, OLFACTORY and VISUAL experience.
Future of Design Competition and Exhibition, 1st Place
In 2006, the BSA sponsored the first Young Designers Digital Exhibition program as a design competition for Massachusetts students and emerging professionals who had earned their architecture degree within the last 10 years. Participants were encouraged to submit built or unbuilt professional work in a video or slideshow format 30 seconds in length. That year, 29 entries were selected to create a 15-minute video that was exhibited at the Build Boston convention and tradeshow.
Jury Comments:
This ambitious project combines compelling images and design with creative
presentation. Great effort is made to maintain the existing buildings, including
Asplund’s Library and the existing library annex. The concept of the “cloud deck”
built upon these existing structures and into Observatory Hill is a fresh and
sophisticated approach to this challenge. The floorplans explain the complex design in an intelligent and persuasive manner. We like the way in which natural light filters down through the cloud deck, illuminating rooms on different floor levels. In addition to an interesting design, the images are gripping and clear diagrams help to tell a good story. Our one recommendation is to use the PowerPoint “fading” transitions. We loved this stylish and clever project for its engaging narrative about design and presentation methods.
