About

I am a recent graduate of the Master of Urban Design program at the University of Miami with strong hand in drawing and computer software skill. I am looking for employment as an urban designer or architect. I really admire your company’s work, and I know urban design and landscape architecture are among your many specializations. My ultimate career objective is to work in these types of projects.

In the Master of Urban Design program, I learned how to develop design processes. For example, my last urban design project, historic preservation and revitalization in Taiyuan City’s Nanhuamen Historic District, was divided into three phases. In phase I, my research involved zoning, environmental context, urban pattern, transportation and existing figure-ground. In phase II, I applied preservation and new urbanism theories to focus on an overall masterplan. In phase III, I created a set of guidelines for this kind of projects and applied my architectural skills to design specific sites and building types. You can find this and several other projects involving urban design and architecture in my portfolio.

Previously, four years of study at Beijing Normal University in Zhuhai also gave me a good foundation in an urban design and architecture. In the first two years of study, I learned architectural design and completed several projects, including apartment interiors, a beauty salon, a transit station and middle school. I learned how to use space, color and material to affect people’s moods. I also learned how to design an impressive building to fulfill its function. For example, in a campus planning project, I designed each classroom building in a zig zag shape to inspire curiosity and happiness in students, and created lounges areas in an irregular space adjacent to classrooms to maximize function. In junior and senior years, I studied urban design and urban planning. I also learned how to use a comprehensive perspective to solve urban design and architectural problems.

My thesis also prepared me for find employment. As part of my thesis project, I have already considered and applied historic preservation and urban design theory to a northern China context, located in Taiyuan’s Nanhuamen Historic District (NHD). After analyzing the history and existing conditions of the site, I wrote the principles for NHD. The purpose of the project is to create a set of guidelines that are adaptable to the NHD policies and principles that government agencies, developers and designers can adjust to their specifications. The guidelines included definitions of contributing buildings and non-contributing buildings, as well as strategies of applying intervention approaches such as matching and contrasting. While at the University of Miami, I helped professors build 3D models of buildings and districts with Sketch Up. As a teaching assistant, I learned how to print architectural drawings and use laser scanners for woodshop work. I also taught undergraduate students Auto Cad, Sketch Up, Photoshop.
