Ukemi is a term used in Aikido practice that refers to the forthright initiation and committed continuation of an encounter, which typically includes being thrown or pinned (sometimes painfully) to the mat, then getting up with alacrity and preparing for the next encounter.
The practice of ukemi is instructive when embarking on any long and strenuous learning process in which initial success and gratification are not certain. It teaches perseverance, endurance, and discipline to learn difficult lessons.
I did my undergraduate work at Humboldt State University near my hometown in Northern California, where I studied theatrical lighting design. After college I spent about eight years working in residential lighting and various office jobs in the San Francisco and Minneapolis areas. I am currently completing dual Master’s degrees in Architecture and Planning at the University of Oregon, and I expect to graduate with both degrees in March 2015.
I have focused my design work mainly on urban infill projects with the primary goal of sensitivity to the built and natural contexts. I would love to apply my architecture and planning skills to designing vibrant urban environments, compact and affordable housing, and walkable streetscapes.
