The International Seminar of Museum Studies at Villa Adriana and the Prize of Archaeology and Architecture "Giambattista Piranesi," connected to it, born in May of 2003 by a proposal for Pier Federico Caliari formalized in a triangle between the Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage of Lazio, directed by Anna Maria Reggiani, the Faculty of Architecture at the Politecnico di Milano and Penn State University in Rome, to which were added secondarily to complete the framework of the founding institutions, the First Faculty of Architecture "Ludovico Quaroni" University La Sapienza of Rome and the Faculty of Architecture, University "Federico II" of Naples.
With the main aim of restoring its intimate connection with architecture and archeology, and restore meaning to the humanistic university teaching and scientific research, the Premio Piranesi stands programmatically and ideologically in continuity with the tradition of the Grand Prix de Rome, the famous annual recognition of the high classical training of French architects, established in 1713 by the Académie Royale d'Architecture, to be held at the headquarters of the French Academy in Rome, and abolished after May 1968.

"The contest "Bernini Pavilion 2010 'is a double opportunity: on the one hand, the reflection of design and training, or rather, between the social tradition of the profession of architect-designer - whose Bridges, Scarpa, Albini, Colombo, Zanuso, Castiglioni, Aulenti, Frattini were highest expression - and its persistence, which appears increasingly weakened in the process of formation and growth within the faculty of architecture, its original birthplace. On the other hand, the willingness of a company deeply rooted in the idea of "humanistic design", to retrace the route of the traditional relationship between the company and designer, that relationship which has historically built the scaffolding of Italian design, today very well narrated and available at a design critic, but dramatically lacking in teachers, seen as an example for the younger generation.
