Located near the historic Woodstock two hours west of New York City, the six acre farmland site is accessed from the road with gentle slope winding upward towards the house. Two natural ponds with local trees frame the surrounding Catskills Mountain view. The client, a young growing family enthusiastic about Modern Art, requested a weekend retreat for family
gathering, as well as entertainment. Inspired by the American Barn House distinctive pitched roof silhouette, along with the corrugated metal skin Storage Silos, the 2,000 square foot house was conceived as an three dimensional object with spaces carved within according to programmatic requirements. A straight staircase acts as a spine connecting all major spaces, from public spaces such as Living Room to private ones such as Bedrooms, each with distinctive spatial proportion and scale. Window openings and skylight further enhance the natural day light inward, while framing the mountain view outward. The enclosed rooftop courtyard can be perceived as a Zen meditation garden, floating above the surrounding natural scenery. The construction is typical wood stud/joist framing with wood siding & corrugated metal skin. The Origami-like interplay of different surface textures compliments the house’s massing, which creates a distinctive yet familiar presence on the landscape.
