In 2004, Olmec Development Corp. was formed as a part-time real estate development consulting company with a focus on helping not-for-profit, state governmental and local community development corporations re-vitalize low-income inner-city neighborhoods. Mr. Al-Malik N. Bey, the company’s principal and owner armed only with his education, experience in architecture and construction technology began partnering with home builders, contractors and local municipal government agencies to explore viable development opportunities. In 2008, the company was awarded a Design/Build contract by the Troy Housing Development Corporation’s to develop (2) Turn-Key Residential Infill Houses for low-income families, which was moderately successful in spite of the local politics and effects of the economic recession.
The company is currently in the conceptual design and feasibility study phase of 2 new development projects in the City of Albany, NY which will consist of a single structure 4 story 18 unit mixed-income building with (4) handicap accessible apartments and (2) 4 unit row houses with (2) handicap accessible units. The projects proposal was received well and with great enthusiasm by a local not- for-profit community development corporation and promises to gain more community support which will ultimately secure public funding and facilitate its success by 2014.
