Vestmyra School

Fauske municipality wanted a school that was inspiring and energising, expanding the pupils' learning area to include the outdoors. In addition to a library, a multi-purpose hall for physical education, and various specialised education rooms, the scheme also provide a strong link to the surroundings and the activity park adjacent to the school.

The building comprises areas for 5th to 10th grade students, divided across 3 wings. The buildings central space, or heart-space as we refer to it, houses an auditorium and library placed with the intent of creating a living and interesting space for the pupils. The administration, specialist units and common functions are located in the wing to the west of the heart-space.

Vestmyra school unifies three local schools to facilitate a strengthening of communal feeling and to provide a social and cultural meetingplace for the whole municipality. There are outdoor spaces for different needs; both smaller areas for play and a large gathering area connected to the school’s heart-space.

Built according to current principles of universally accessible design, the building is easily accessible and navigable for everyone.

In order to create optimal spaces for learning and socialising, we used floor to ceiling windows in order to let in as much natural light as possible. A cheerful colour scheme stimulates the senses, and the abundant use of timber makes for a warm and welcoming atmosphere in which the pupils can thrive.
