Encastrada

This project is called Encastrada which is Spanish for "something being embedded in something else". The site for this project is in Bushwick Inlet located between two parks north and south with access to the city street on the east side and access to the water on the west side. The area of Bushwick used to be a fairly industrial zone but in the past 15 years has made strides towards a more residential area. The previous site owner had a large 800ft by 200ft box on the site that disconnected all the surrounding area from one another so the major goal of this design was to allow passage through the building and create environments that blended the boundaries of the park and the performing arts center. Resulting in a series of "inside-outside" spaces were created with a fabric and cable system to allow for the extension of the building to also be a covered park area creating a shared space. Due to the recent shift to a residential area, Bushwick Inlet lacks a community center and this building helps join the area.
