The client’s existing property had a nicely updated 1950’s house with a beautiful Japanese inspired garden with a small pond in the back. The client’s initial instinct was to add a sunroom on an existing back terrace in between the house and the garden for a more engaging connection between inside and outside.
Inspired by the concept of bringing the outside in, insertion of this small 275 square foot,12 foot and 24 living area with cozy small fire place connected the client’s existing home with the outdoors. A new 22-foot-wide by 8-foot-high folding window wall that frames the view out to the landscaped pond that when fully open blurs the lines between inside and out.
Beyond the new window wall, a new exterior seating terrace with outdoor cooking area leads to a new landscaped pathway connection to the pond. The 11’-6” height of the addition provides clearstory windows that fill the addition with overhead light.
Completed in 2017, the new addition bought together the best of the new and the old for a more harmonious connection between inside and out.
