Interior Design is a great field. Architecture is a great field. With good communication, a project can make great use of both. But when the architect deigns interiors unimportant until late DD, or when an interior designer decides that the decided-upon scope isn't sufficient and starts changing the scope that was under the purview of the architect, shit goes sideways.

Yes, it matters when panels are solely made up of white males, as the majority of them have been for the last 500 years. And the only way that change can happen is people - white male and not - saying "I will only serve on panels that include diversity."

OH JESUS CHRIST "flight training" and a "mountain house"?!?!?! Money to burn. Barf.
The reek of entitlement. Sad thing is that guy is an amateur compared to what goes on in my 'hood.
can't fault him for not liking the design, or for not really knowing how to fix it. Always amazing to me that so many people want to cheap out on such a significant project.
I wonder what flight training costs in relation to the architect's fee?
WikiRicki sez "don't overthink it", LOL
That particular style of house has become so commoditized that it has lost all meaning.
Still available through web archives ricki.
Non Seq, how is the baby? How old is he now? I ran into a friend today who has a 3 month old. He was telling me how life-changing and wonderful it is to have a baby then went "But yeah, you have a kid, you know!" It's still beautiful every time, tho.
Thanks Donna. Little guy will be a full 12 months next week. We've been discharged from his cardiologist but still have other minor issues to follow up with due to his size/weight. It's been one helluva fun ride so far. He even stopped my office last night and sat at my desk.
Chris, surely you can get your oldest daughter trained up!
smart girl
My husband told me he wants to be an interior designer. I offered to let him pick some finishes. He backed out. Dang, cause he would probably be good at it...
Happy Friday everyone!
It's about paint colour, fabric patterns, and cubicle placement Ricki.
Oh I know Rick. Thanks though.
Maybe he sucks at it too. Last time I went out of town for a few days I came home to my dining room painted LILAC. Ha ha ha.
I believed that once too, Rick. Then I worked with a few IDs who wanted to "transition to architecture". They got as far as heads of ID Departments and stopped there. I guess fucking up good designs right before CDs is a lofty enough goal without all that pesky lernin' and those damned exams. Let someone else give a shit about how to keep the water out and how to accommodate the disabled. I've got rugs to specify. Did I say specify? I meant paste a picture of in an InDesign file.
where's that mansplainin' thread?
Thanks for susplaining that, Rick.
Its as though you can watch Ricki going off the deep end. He comes back, after some sort of hiatus and his post are quick and to the point. Since then, they have gotten more and more verbose. Soon, the dumpster fires will be raging again.
Soon?
In a relative sense... We are in the early stages of the initial rebuke by the community. Replies are starting to turn against him in a mild way. These will increase. Next someone will say "stop picking on Ricki." This will ease the pushback from the OPs briefly and increase his boldness in opinion and word count.
whoooosh
I've got no desire to contribute to the dumpster fire this time around. But hey, it's Friday and a long weekend soon.
.
is there a setting to not get updates on threads?
I see a choice btwn instant and daily, but not turning them off completely...love you guys, but the push media is a pet peeve of mine
proto, there was a bug about that action and discussion of how to resolve it a couple of pages back in TC, I think?
thx, donna...that helped me...just needed to hit the follow/unfollow toggle at the top of the thread
And it started again
tintt, what I read was that you "offered to let him pick the dishes".
Either way, keep him in his place.
You reminded me... the lilac color that he painted the dining room was pulled from some dishes that his mom gave us that he remembered from childhood. Makes it even funnier. The dishes are lilac, brown, and orange. Yeah, he isn't allowed to design. Even though he is a good artist! nobody's perfect.
In my experience it all balances out. The better someone is at one thing the worse they are at something else.
I'm helping to plan a significant event for one of the non-profits I work with and this just happened: We invited a local person to give remarks who is very well respected and connected and is also a white male. His response was that he would love to help us on it but he has a personal rule not to serve on any kid of group or panel that is only white men so can we please forward him the other invitees? I about cheered out loud at my desk! This is how it should be done, people!
hmmm, sounds a little self-serving...does it really matter who else has been asked to talk? maybe just reply in a way that confirms his request regarding white males without names?
Yes, it matters when panels are solely made up of white males, as the majority of them have been for the last 500 years. And the only way that change can happen is people - white male and not - saying "I will only serve on panels that include diversity."
Not saying it doesn't matter big picture at all, just that it may be a PC way for him to get the info. Whoever he is probably shouldn't be basing the invitation on who else is gonna be there...maybe it's sincere, tho. I'll admit to being a cynic
Happy Friday TC! I've been buried in work recently, so the news is a little old, but I'm officially an architect now! I think I posted back in March when I passed my last exam but it's official now. NCARB took their sweet time reviewing my record and then they finally got around to sending it to the state. A day or two after that the state issued me my license.
Next up: to AIA, or not to AIA?
congrats!
So are you keeping the intern title?
Huge kudos!
tintt, no. The plan was always to switch over to Everyday Architect when I got licensed. I could keep it, but I think it would just get too confusing. I will miss calling out architects on the forum behind the title of an intern, but maybe as Everyday Architect they'll think for a whole second before they dismiss my viewpoint. I still plan posting to the blog occasionally, so that won't change, it will just be under a different screen name. Over the time the focus might drift from internship issues, but I'm not giving up on it just because I've earned a different title.
You'll always be everyday intern to me.
Good to know I've made a lasting impression Miles.
Everyday Intern Architect...

Hoping this is a typo and the job posting should be for writing 5.0 exam questions. Why would they be hiring question writers for the old exams that are only available for another year?
http://archinect.com/jobs/entry/150010041/are-4-0-exam-question-writer
their website says they've been featured on archinect.net, which does not redirect to archinect.com (at least not for me)
There are people still taking all 4.0. I'm also guessing (haven't been paying too much attention since I did all 4.0) that many questions will be applicable to 5.0 test prep as well.
Hey I'm late to this but CONGRATULATIONS Everyday Whatever You Want To Call Yourself Now!!!! Doesn't it feel fucking great?!
Zaha
Missed this today.
How does anyone have the time to do any work when majority of the time is doing other shit? I've been updating documents, document management, document controllers, clients emails, teaching people how to do things and office general bull. I'm gonna be a pornstar in my next life.
What you've described is "work". The fun stuff isn't.
I've been coming in at 6 am to get stuff done, no distractions for 2 hours
RIP Life balance.
actually works out great, I'm out the door at 4:30 every day. I've learned that there are often an "architecture emergencies" around 4:50, which I don't mind missing out on
Started the day guffawing into my cereal bowl over covfefe; ending the day near crying into my bourbon over the state of things that brought us to covfefe. How did things get this fucked up?
Congrats, EA!
I wrote a somewhat optimistic response to Trump's Paris withdrawal, and what it means for his 'legacy'. Somebody decided it was worth promoting: https://politicsmeanspolitics.com/the-irrelevant-autocrat-702264c0a3a3
new site ads with autoplay audio are not welcome additions to the forum
I enjoyed reading that tduds. The question I have is was this looming reduction in power of the federal executive level an intentional plan or an unpredicted outcome?
I simply cannot believe that any effect of Trump's actions are intentional.
PS did you realize that autocorrect changes tduds to "studs"? Ooh baby!
My 8th grade nickname was 'Studley' ...it was supposed to be ironic then, though.
Also Donna I see you are on the new Young Architect podcast! I'll have to give it a listen soon. (Michael is a bit of a professional acquaintance / facebook friend)
What were those excited cats up to, David?!
Poll: would you eat lab-manufactured meat? Yes/no
(Not cat meat.)
If it tastes the same? Probably. I could get over the thought of it being produced in a lab relatively quickly.
Depends how it's cooked. If you can cook it rare... medium rare at worst, I'll have at it! Even if it's cat.
I will eat lab meat as soon as it's available. I'm just curious how others feel about it.
We eat jello and other crap manufactured, meat wouldn't be any different imo. It'll be like quorn.
OMG we just watched War Machine. It is SO GOOD and so awful, but funny, but awful. Like Dr. Strangelove or Idiocracy. Horrifying in how bare it all is. And Brad Pitt is so NOT sexy in it! He's just another flawed ambitious human, as we all are.
Also, there's basically only 2 women characters, but they are both excellent. Men are the ones who've screwed up so many things recently! Or is that "forever"?
OMG. Just watch the movie. It's SO good
Do your watch movies that don't have Brad Pitt?
Yes, Miles. Lots of non-Pitt movies. Such as Idiocracy and Dr. Strangelove!
Sellers was great. Love 'Being There'. Strangelove, too.
^ Just give me your Social Security, bank account and credit card numbers (for identity verification purposes only) and all your troubles are over. I promise.
And they couldn't claim it on the internet if it wasn't true.
I'm thinking tintt got the Greg A job.
And that my silly spoof post can't compete with reality.
Yeah, but I gave it to Bulgar.
That's a herpes job. Who ever gets it is never getting rid of it.
So.... baby was born and all is well. I've been having fun critiquing the hospital architectures. We need to put dimmer lights in the patient rooms - ok? thanks.
Didn't even know you were expecting tintt! Congratulations!
Congrats tintt!!! Happy to hear all is well. Hope you're able to get some rest too. BTW, I did the same thing (critique the hospital design) when we had ours earlier this year.
Congratulations Tintt!! Did you tour all the ones in the area? They specialize and actually market :P Some are pretty high end, other's look like converted 50's bomb shelters.
Mighty... picked the hospital based on factors other than the facility itself. It isn't either high end nor resembling of a bygone era. I do have a view out the window of another part of campus (the emergency room drop off) that is nearing the end of a renovation that is poorly designed though and it makes me frustrated to see the dysfunction. That probably gives it away.
Yes, congrats. But, critiquing the architecture while giving birth is a sign of advanced architectural dementia. LOL. I knew I was losing it when I found myself sitting in some building drawing the wall sections in my mind.
I was diagnosed with architectural distrustia and spatial functioning over-analysistitis in second grade. It probably started by visiting a hospital in the first place. The condition has only worsened with time and knowledge!
The worry now is that you may have passed it on to the next generation
Geezer, there is only concern for those traits being inherited is if the ICFTS gene is also passed along (aka I can fix this shit gene). Fingers crossed. ;)
Congrats tintt. Hope all is well.
Cheers.
congrats tintt!
Thanks everyone!!!!
Nice work, tintt. Congrats.
Boy or girl?
Socially dominant sex.
Oedipus laughs.
Mental image: tintt in the delivery room, checking A'nect and firing off snippets of wisdom between contractions .
Isn't it regressive to be assigning a gender? Very patriarchal. (Mockery of culture aside... congratulations and best wishes!)
Gender is assigned?
tint,
Frankly, having a baby is the Wright thing to do! Congrats.
Thanks again everyone!
