I used to drink it black. I've recently switched to espresso with ice and milk. No sugar. I add milk because I've decided it protects the teeth against stains! I want a coffee shop with service. When I am ordering a cup of coffee and am holding a bunch of stuff in my hands, I don't want to take the cup over to the condiment bar and take the lid off, find the milk, hope there is some in there, hope it is fresh, pour it in my cup and put the lid back on. Why do people do this and pay so much?
situationist
Sep 2, 16 11:20 pm
you pay $5 for the experience - not the coffee.
If I'm paying $5, they better be playing some obscure album I never heard before - something my mid-90s indie-snob self could have related to. The barista better behave and look like someone who just graduated from art school. The decor and patrons better fit into the stereotype of the hip/quirky urban neighborhood you're currently in (and ideally you're there at 11am on a Tuesday and these people seem like they have no job, yet lots of time and money). They better make the shit out of that coffee - they should have chemix pour-over as the only option for decaf, various cold-brew on tap with single-source origin listed on the pulls... The barista should be capable of recommending if you should add milk or not...
If they have none of this stuff, you're buying legal drugs from someone who knows they're the only game in town.

I enjoy lurking (and occasionally commenting) on Archinect forums, but I have to say, after that "Dear NCARB" thread i'm going to do a Miles and abstain until he who shall not be named is gone.
Unfortunately, that probably means I won't be visiting the site otherwise... I can grab the podcasts via my RSS feed, and the few other original articles the same way. Most everything else ends up on one of the other (Architzer, ArchDaily, ArchPaper) sites anyways. For me, the forums and discussion (including after articles and news) is a huge part of why I visit Archinect.... if that environment is toxic and non-productive, what is there to differentiate this place?
Amelia, Orhan, Paul, please fix this. This is a place to connect architects. Someone is actively undermining that function of the website and creating a toxic environment.

I originally quit the forum a few years back b/c of a previous, Balkins-like wackjob who couldn't quit jizzing all over the forums back THEN. This problem comes back again and again and there should be something in the user agreement that specifically states that spamming/monopolizing threads or prolongued hounding/antagonizing of members destroys the forum community and will not be tolerated. The previous person that engaged in this behavior successfully, and permanently, changed the tone and nature of the forum community and I was not the only long-time member who fled. The forum still isn't the same as it was prior to that individual's "contributions". Because of the unique nature of TC, I bet you could actually read back through here and pinpoint the precise timeline of the decaying of the site due to the onslaught of one single individual.
However, the problem isn't just the one malignant member, but more damagingly it is others' responses to and engagement with the member. In fact, more than anything, it was the way others persisted in engaging the malignant member (knowingly, tauntingly, but unendingly) that ended up so thoroughly stifling other discussion that it became impossible to maintain forum momentum. People just stopped posting, b/c what was the point? It was going to devolve into a shit-flinging circus between the same few folks anyway.
It is not only these types of people that are harmful but our responses to them. I saw that happening again over the last few pages of TC and I nearly came on here to say I was wrong to come back and was leaving again, permanently. Seeing, now, that I'm not the only one who can't stand the constant baiting and arguing makes me feel like perhaps I can find a place in this community after all.
There are so few of us out in the world. Archinect has, in the past, been a beautiful place for me. Let's ALL try our best to keep it that way, and not blame one individual for everything but rather strive to be friendly and to be mindful of contributing to the community rather than potentially dividing it, or exacerbating damage with our own responses. Nobody at a dinner party would tolerate it long if two people started loudly haranguing each other. If you are one of those two then you are part of the problem.

Well said manta.
I attempted to get my blog going again last year but stopped posting after a couple of new posts and it became clear to me that I wouldn't be able to have a discussion that didn't devolve into something all about Balkins. The general theme of the blog, the profession from an aspiring architect's viewpoint, is something that would have always attracted his attention and given him reason to feel like he should engage in the discussion and spread his twisted view of the profession he aspires(?) to. The discussion on my post on the intern title debate is a good example. http://archinect.com/arch-ellipsis/ncarb-punted-the-intern-title-debate
The thing is, looking back on that post and the comments, Balkins actually tried to stay on topic, but so much space and effort had to be devoted to correcting his skewed viewpoints, that the discussion ultimately lost its momentum and the discussion that should have happened, didn't. Ultimately, I write the blog as a way to help and encourage discussion about licensure, internships, finding jobs, etc. I decided that allowing Balkins to be a part of that did more harm than good. So I took a break from writing. It's really a shame because so much of the intern and licensure process has been changing recently. I wish I would have been posting about it.
Perhaps I should have taken a break from the forums as well. I know I've done my fair share of responding to and engaging Balkins. That's really all he wants anyway, someone to respond to him. It doesn't matter if it is just to call him an idiot ... he thrives on the attention.
If Archinect is looking at doing something soon, I'll stick around and start contributing with my blog again. If not, I think I'm going to leave altogether.

Some sort of code of conduct is pretty SOP for every other internet forum I've participated on, or at least the ones that have remained viable over time without getting overrun with trolls and spammers. Some boards have more heavy-handed mods than others and I appreciate Archinect's relatively laissez-faire approach to moderation, but there has to be some standard of acceptable behavior.

i think archinects fairly open policy towards posts is a real strength - a degree of off topic ranting gives it character and keeps it entertaining. but there does need to be a mechanism to limit the disruption when a person turns ranting into a crusade which kills incipient discussion and repels those of us who post only ocassionally after trying to read through a thread.
maybe something like a daily character limit / post count limit for people who post too much junk to let them get an a few words in and eventually redeem themselves but prevent overruns of vitriolic wordspiel.
that thread on how to find a good young architect cheered me up on a rough day. it's nice to remember there are intelligent curious people out there, and gratifying to see mature and sincere responses. i hope we dont scare them all away!

i don't think we have to have a codified set of rules to say "you broke this rule, therefore we have a right to ban you." i think archinect holds the right to ban whoever they want, with or without reason. if their community is suffering due to the actions of one member, i think they should exercise that right.
social norms are rules that are generally followed, yet generally not written out.

Why don't you stop posting statements that does nothing but just causes more anger.
First, I TOLD YOU THAT I DO NOT GO ABOUT STALKING women like you are saying. As for threatening, I'm not here to pander to other people. Maybe my "Take no bullshit... aggressiveness" can be threatening to the timid. The timid are always threatened by everything. You have to be aggressive to be taken seriously in an environment where people don't think of you as a person but as just a number. Aggressive.... but not violent. Aggressive.... not physical harming the other person.
If she thought I would be physically harming her... then... why didn't she call the UO Police within an hour of then or any other time she saw me.
When she did call the UO Police (which is also campus security), there had been zero communication from me. I had not talked to her during that day. There was no precipitating danger to her or anyone. I had not spoke to her in over a week to the day she sent UO Police. I did not threaten her life or physical well-being.
You just don't want to believe that because you like to believe the worse and you only want to distort the truth and facts into a story because you hate me. You hate me and we all know it. Guess what, I hate you, too!

No, jla-x, I point out how shitty DS+R's work is all the time, too.
In the future, when that house's ruins are the only thing left standing in that area, the next Vignola will come along with the ancient text in hand (discovered through combing the browser history of the last remaining hard drive, belonging to one Donna sink). Deciding that this particular building is of particular significance, the revived architectural order for the coming millennia will be based on the purity of "unconventionally terrible proportions."
That that is particularly particular. I need to find a new editor.
Deciding that this particular building is of particular significance, the revived architectural order
is Millenialism taken?
@tinnt have to agree with Non, black is best. Where was that Corvus? I like Novo which doesn't seem too snooty. But I do love my pour-over.
Also @Olaf can't believe that is an upcoming show on Fox... Seems like something for Adult Swim not Fox.
Hit TC!
Good points Manta.
ah... black coffee from my french press... hard to beat, esp at 4:30am.
Well, there should BE a user agreement, how about that.
Yeah I'd say if you admit to stalking and threatening women such that the police get involved you probably shouldn't be on an architecture related forum. That's in reference to resident psycho Rick Balkins.
i think archinects fairly open policy towards posts is a real strength - a degree of off topic ranting gives it character and keeps it entertaining. but there does need to be a mechanism to limit the disruption when a person turns ranting into a crusade which kills incipient discussion and repels those of us who post only ocassionally after trying to read through a thread.
maybe something like a daily character limit / post count limit for people who post too much junk to let them get an a few words in and eventually redeem themselves but prevent overruns of vitriolic wordspiel.
that thread on how to find a good young architect cheered me up on a rough day. it's nice to remember there are intelligent curious people out there, and gratifying to see mature and sincere responses. i hope we dont scare them all away!
i don't think we have to have a codified set of rules to say "you broke this rule, therefore we have a right to ban you." i think archinect holds the right to ban whoever they want, with or without reason. if their community is suffering due to the actions of one member, i think they should exercise that right.
social norms are rules that are generally followed, yet generally not written out.

I felt the same about that young-architect thread. It gave me an opening to write something fresh and clean without fear that blahkins would interject.

Anyway, I leave for Norway in less than two weeks and I'm very excited. I might have to get some shots to rival some of David's mountain pictures.
Josh,
Have a enjoyable and safe trip when you do and safe return.
Can someone please find the police report?
Eh, I don't care enough to.
Have a great trip Josh! I just spontaneously booked a flight to Edinburgh in a couple weeks... if I'm gonna be unemployed I might as well be funemployed.
