Back.
China was very interesting, but no time for serious architectural study as most of the time I was in a moving car or in a factory. Would be interested now in reading Rem's stuff on the Pearl River Delta, but as I have refused in the past to buy or read any Rem text, I wouldnt know whether he thinks an urbanisation of chaos and inevitability is a good or bad thing...
Needless to say, I can confirm that New Zealand is a paradise.
Most interesting was a trip from Guangzhou to Shantou on the eastern coast of Guangdong. The people in the rural districts ether side of their motorway bury their dead in crypts on the side of hills or in man-formed earth bunkers. Reminded me of hobbit holes. What was intriguing is that they surround the portals into the earth with pieces of tinsel and quartz so that each grave shimmers in the light. It was really beautiful to see whole hills for 60 km's covered with light.
On the way beack, in dusk, you could see the hills lit with where people were living, and also red lanterns lighting up the landscape in family shrines or hanging from trees...
Really beautiful...

sporadic- and this is why I keep mentioning USC in the school discussions. There's great work coming out of there, from day one. I'm so glad that Daniel's blog is attracting positive attention!
I'm a tad knackered up myself actually... I spent Cinco de Mayo studying my ass off for the LEED exam, so my bf took me out to El Cholo (mmmmmmm) to make up, and celebrate my pass last night. It was cheaper to order a pitcher of margaritas, and I ended up drinking two thirds of our pitcher as he was driving. So it's a lovely tequila morning.

ya, more than the work, the wisdom in Daniel's words was impressive.
don't get me wrong, the work is nice too...very similar to the type of work coming out of UF's lower division studios (first 2 years).
Work similar in quality to Daniel's would be representative of those that could expect to make it into the upper division studios...
I especially like the white cubes...elegant, without the tectonic noise so often found on similar 1st year projects...

I'm in love lately with this feature on flickr that lets you annotate photos. I'm also a huge fan of observing/spying on the mundane details of people's lives. So this post of bryanboyer's desk makes me giddy with pleasure.

soulikeit is one of the growing masses of sad "soul"s who have been spoiled by too much easy access to info on the internet.
it's always easier to ask someone instead of doing the work to find out the answer yourself. unfortunately this won't work since everything valuable that comes from design (graphic or architectural) involves rolling up your own sleeves and doing the work yourself
holy shit if those threads aren't funny though!
