I would like to hear your opinion regarding what material and method to use so as to represent a stone wall for a 1:10 model of a 100 years old farm building. It should not be made in a realistic way, like it is made for example on those typical train models. The real building is made out of stone and wood, but the model must be made out of just one materila/color. The differences should ne shown in a way that i cannot find yet. So the stones has to be shown in an abstract, minimalistic way.
Any advise welcome!

I've done it by laser cutting chipboard/basswood and then gluing the layers together. Takes a while because you are layering pieces on top of each other but the laser cut edges give it a nice look along with the layering.

Threadkilla, did you even read the description of my thread? The question is about other methods than the classic stone wall models.. I am asking about an ABSTRACT method. Not like train models. Not like those cute dollhouses. It must be done using ONE MATERIAL for the entire model (the differentation of materials will be sawn using an engravment or cutting or another method. NOT by using colors.

sorry I misread your post - didn't see the 'not realistic'.
At any rate, I'd recommend styrofoam carving for you, just abstract the stone parts into a pattern that you inscribe into the foam (like thisor thisor this - just reduce the tiling pattern to a minimum number of lines/shapes, or the simplest geometry that still corresponds to how your stones look and are stacked), and same with the other materials that need to be shown ie. wood and straw - again if you look at each of those videos, every one has different tips and ends up with a different look to their 'stone'. This will be way faster than preparing files, laser cutting, and assembly of 1mm thick material, especially if you're not even planning on painting your model. Pick a foam that you like the colour of - pink, blue, and white are the most common for polystyrene foams.
Hell, if you go with the white EPS stuff, those foam bubbles have the look and consistency of stacked boulders at a small scale, so you'd just need to shape the material into the other textures with a combination of a sharp blade, a hot tool, and some sandpaper/wirebrush...

To achieve this abstract atmosphere, i was thinking to not show the stone in the whole surface of the wall, but only in some parts. Similar to the way we represent it sometimes in an architectural drawing (example: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BygC6zq-7drvRzVkS2hiazJsRFU/view?usp=sharing )
