I'm not an expert in medical field but from my own understanding:
Residency is a term used for internship in medical, social working/counseling, and similar and related field in hospital and clinical settings. Basically, clinical residency. The term is apparently common there and is basically the supervised internship before they can fully practice as a doctor independently.

I almost did the same thing. But I couldn't handle the commitment. Hats off to you, I have a ton of respect for anyone who can make it through med school. Especially if you have a back-up plan. It was too easy for me to quit and go back into architecture.
