Sedhiou Walls of Tales

The idea aims to create a contemporary iconic architectural structure that is taking into consideration Sedhiou’s vernacular architecture spirit, preserving, and reformulating their lo- cal architectural language through a contemporary expressions to create an environment that fits the local community needs and aspirations, through bridging the gap between their legacy and the future.

The building is constructed upon the local community’s narratives; acting like a Griot trans- ferring Sedhiou’s local cultures, preserve them, and pass them on to the next generations. The outdoor spaces between the domes create a communal areas away from the busy streetscape, also as a place for social interaction, functions as an open community center for gathering local community under connected thatched roof mesh, designed to be aniconic structure that is respecting Sedhiou’s skyline harmony, yet an experiment promoting for the West-African avant garde.

The building shows new innovative use of local materials, replacing the concrete walls with locally made compressed earth blocks, coupled with wide overhanging thatched domes that is designed to collect water from rainfalls. The openings in the thatched roof allow pas- sive air ventilation to cool the building, and light to pass through the space to complement with the scenographic architecture, expressed in the tales of the ancestors, the West-African cultures, arts, and patterns that is built within the interactive walls.

People of Sedhiou along with Griots will participate in the construction activities by building their stories with their hands, also next the generations will have the opportunity to add their stories on the walls where the walls are built to be timeless. The building will leave a wide social impact, hoping for a revival for the African culture and history.
