The Pheasantry Welcome Centre

The Pheasantry Welcome Centre in Bushy Park is a thriving hub that not only provides park goers with information, but is also home to a bustling café. Mizzi Studio transformed and reinvented the building’s identity and improved its functioning capacity on a minimal budget, whilst preserving and enhancing the original fabric of the building.

This was a small yet ambitious project that built upon a larger existing building development. Working with the existing line of the roof’s archway, the extension sweeps along a mirrored inverse path of the existing roof line and tapers the new building in to the woodland.

The ambition for the new café building was to enrich its surrounding landscape and enhance the visitor experience. It had to cater for the large volume and diversity of visitors to Bushy Park.

We played on the original building’s strengths and created a seamless integration through use of materials to match the existing building.

Any form of development within The Royal Parks is generally only allowed in exceptional cases and is rigorously monitored. We acquired building approval for the café from the Richmond Council, working closely with arboricultural consultants to ensure that no trees would be compromised by the development.
