Cloud Canopy

The goal of this project was to create a kinetic canopy structure for shading desks in Gund Hall. Derived from Chuck Hoberman’s expanding iris structures, the canopy expands along the dividing rail between desks and leans against the central partition while contracted. Trapeeze fabric is buttoned to the joints on the underside of the piece and stretches in opposite directions when expanded and contracted. This structure could be easily increased in scale and used as a temporary shading structure for disaster relief or for staging various types of temporary events.
