The Organism | Urban Planning Competition | Kyiv / Ukraine

Open spaces form the fundamental network of the project, in order to suit the climatic and environmental conditions of the river environment in the best possible way. buildings are added as if they were landscape components. as part of the strategy, we create a vocabulary comprising five primary layers. these layers are:

1H existing values.
Leaving traces and edges, flora and fauna elements, complex land and water ecosystems untouched;

2E the meeting between the city and the water.
This general theme is ensured through a ‘democratisation’ of the water surfaces by the establishment of new water-based activities as well as the amplification and organisation of already existing ones; views of the water will provide an attraction that constantly changes with the seasons, the weather, the atmosphere, every day, every hour.

3A the green city.
Access to green areas and coherent links to different types of natural landscape structures, offering – for example – a kilometre-long uninterrupted walking and cycle path system, which crosses almost untouched natural environments, like blood vessels our body. At the same time the promenades enhance views of Kyiv and provide a scenic route into nature.

4R iconic places.
Public buildings and businesses in a large, partly monumental scale are added mainly on the south-eastern peninsula of Truhaniv island and in the northern part of Venetsyansky island, forming a new dense urban fabric of leisure and spare time activities, of restaurants, hotels, shopping areas, river terraces, summer and winter beaches, swimming baths, pools and playing fields. densification of the open space in between the built structures provides shelter, promotes outdoor activity, minimises the wind turbulence and the influence of rainfall. This area forms the gastric centre of the project, the middle of the whole organism of Kyiv city islands.

5T the massif and the maze.
This idea is based on the perception of the new city areas to be developed as a massif into which streets, squares and other public spaces are cut. The spatial concept of point development maintains the idyllic natural character of the river. the main focus for the regeneration of the islands is to establish links to the surrounding areas. The plan proposes, that existing building structures are mostly integrated into the program. The new buildings on Vodnikov island will be low, in a variety of housing typologies with a minimum of two and a maximum height of five stories. These buildings will establish an urban space similar to an independent garden town including a church, sports activities, and a museum of steamship-building and architecture.

The urban landscape will be used to regenerate the identity of the area, as it transforms from an almost neglected area to an urban lung of recreation. Seen as a whole, the proposed plan provides an urban structure which is basically a ’summary’ of the City you already know: classical Kyiv as you know it from the bridges, the parks, the garden towns, the historical city centre, the river, the lakes, the forest areas."
