West Dundee Public Library

My concept for the west Dundee library was inspired the river that is east of the site. I used the fluidity of the river to describe my buildings fluid form. I chose the concept of fluidity because a library is a house or storage building for information and the way we access that information is determine by technology.  However technology is always changing and the way we learn is constantly improving. Likewise a river is constantly flowing, changing direction, and is an unstoppable force.  One cannot stop the flow of a river and one certainly cannot stop the flow of the advancement of technology and wisdom.
This library would not have as many stacks as a traditional library because at the center of it is a large digital library.  There are individual desks with I readers on them. This gives the community members the option to simply upload the book they would like to read to there own personal I reader. The library also benefits from this because the librarians do not have to worry about people steeling books, so less staff is need to operate the library.
The two turns that the building makes are inspired by rocks in a river.  The rocks represent the existing buildings and the traditional community of west Dundee.  The rocks are what cause a river to turn twist and bend; they make the river interesting, but they do not stop it.  In the same way the community is what makes this building interesting by circulating through it and inhabiting it.
The building is mostly concrete, the skin and floors are all concrete, this is because concrete is a fluid material. It can be molded in ways that make it appear that a fluid is frozen in space.
The secondary material is sheet metal. The spaces defined by the metal material are rooms of interest. The material gives these spaces hierarchy. The metal spaces are arranged in a way that an occupant can only see one at a time. Thus giving that room more hierarchy within the section of the library it is in. the uniqueness of theses rooms and the curious nature of an occupant create the circulation through the building.
The final material is glass.  Glass is distributed throughout the building to allow for natural lighting. The center of the building wrapped in glass because at the center of the library is the digital library. (The focal point of this building)
