Comprehensive Design, Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium

The proposed site for the new Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium is where the existing structure lies. This site is centrally located on the mall of the University of Arizona campus in Tucson, AZ. The current program of the building has outgrown the spaces provided and this proposal addresses all factors that affect the site. The Planetarium in particular is a strong component of the program and must reveal itself as the dominant form of the structure. Site access and movement are reflected in the design of the structure. The movement influences the program placement within the building. This creates opportunities and challenges with views to the site because they all must be visually agreeable. The surrounding context of the campus is bricked and rigid, and lacks any sort of shading devices. Considering of shading is vastly important. By pushing the program underground this provides controlled temperatures and lighting. It also provides an opportunity for sustainable systems, like thermal massing and water catchment. The slow descension into the earth relates to the collections of the museum. From the temporary to the permanent collections of minerals, they are theoretically returned to the earth from which they came. The conclusion of these concepts creates a thoroughly integrated building design.
