EYUP ESENTEPE MOSQUE

About the Project

The building is located in Eyüp, one of the oldest settlements in Istanbul. The design site is situated on a steep slope, presenting significant challenges in terms of the orientation of the mosque structures.

Eyüpsultan's historic city center is predominantly composed of historical buildings. However, the project site is in one of the district’s more recently developed neighborhoods. This project aims to reinterpret architectural elements inspired by the past in a contemporary manner. The "muqarnas," a common element in mosque architecture that transitions from the flat plane to the curved surface of the dome, plays a central role in the design. Among the various construction techniques of muqarnas, the style developed by the Turks, known as the "Turkish triangle," was chosen for this project. By combining triangles of different sizes, a shell was created that rises from the façade towards the dome. The beams supporting the dome of the octagonal-plan building are also designed in triangular forms.

In this small mosque, the dimensions of the transparent surfaces on the façades have been increased to create a sense of a larger interior space. The façade design was completed by placing mesh panels with patterns that echo elements of the past in front of the windows.

This five-story building not only serves a religious function but also includes parking areas, a library, classrooms, and social service units.
