ASU W. P. Carey School of Business

Housing instructional spaces, administrative offices, student and career services, and social spaces, McCord Hall will function as the new home for the graduate, MBA, and Executive Education programs, providing each with a distinct and separate identity. The large, covered outdoor courtyard will serve as the new heart of the School. Executive Education programs will be located at the top of the complex with views out towards the ASU campus, while faculty and undergraduate instructional spaces will remain in the adjacent existing BA and BAC buildings, to which the new building is connected at several points.

With the goal of achieving LEED Silver certification or higher forMcCord Hall, the W. P. Carey School of Business takes a leadership position in integrated environmental sustainability, reflecting the aspirations of ASU and the student body. While the height and scale of the building relate to the adjacent context, the orientation and massing are designed to reduce solar exposure in the hot, arid Arizona climate. The project will incorporate a retractable fabric roof over the courtyard, façade design sensitive to solar orientation, and strategically placed water features and water retention gardens in major outdoor gathering spots to collect and reuse water on the site and to enhance thermal comfort for all building users. The building materials, including terracotta, speak to the area’s natural surroundings just as high-performance enclosure materials and mechanical systems utilizing earth ducts and chilled beams will help to minimize overall energy use requirements and long-term operating costs.
