Greenter is an oasis in the city, a natural space full of life. It offers a new opportunity for knowledge and
connection with nature.
The project is implemented in Mayfield, a neighbourhood located on the eastern side of Manchester
City Center, England.
The site is found in the southwest of Mayfield, towards the north side is the River Medlock, which is one
of the most important rivers in Manchester. This micro-canyon houses typical flora and fauna that have
disappeared due to industrial pollution generated throughout the history of Manchester.
The Greenter Building emerges as a response to this pollution issue aimed at promoting two goals.
The first focuses on increasing awareness of the importance of native species; for this, it proposes
an exhibition space, which provides information on the subject. Besides, it accommodates rooms for
workshops, where both students and the public can complement their knowledge about the site’s flora
and fauna.
The second objective seeks to create a positive environmental impact on the River Medlock. The Aquatic
Garden, which is located as a central part of the building, means to absorb impurities from the water
and transform them into a suitable environment to attract native species. It also houses laboratories
located in the east wing of the building. They have the purpose to serve as a tool to test new ways of
water purification and verify that the aquatic garden is fulfilling its function
