Bar do Rio is a cocktail bar located in the Parque Verde in Coimbra, Portugal, with fabulous views of the Mondego River. Our clients, the managers of the old Rock Cafe, wanted a drastic remodel to bring new customers into a casual lounge atmosphere.
In order to achieve this, the original bar configuration was kept but all the old decoration were removed except for the wooden platforms, which provided a warm counterpoint to the neutral tones of the space.
The remodeled bar aimed to complement the river setting with rounded features and colors, as well as the use of mirrors, glass and playful reflections. The ceiling has a strong presence, so we decided to perforate it with big negative voids, like giant bubbles, to contrast the lamps that seemed to levitate.
The countertops were built with white quartz stone and lacquered glass while white spheres adorned the main wall, which was covered in a big scale pattern made from almond shells powder, and a perforated wall consisted of four backlit wood crafted panels.
Whites and grays were chosen for decoration and furniture to provide a clean and bright space during the day and radically transform at night to become electric with lighting that changes to the beat of the DJ's House music."
