Invisible Dot, Somers Town

Described by the Independent newspaper as 'an industry powerhouse', the Invisible Dot, is the first custom-built comedy venue to open in London for 20 years, and home to the production company of the same name.

The Invisible Dot is a successful performance group, based in north London. The group intended to relocate into a new premises, with the brief requiring a full refurbishment of the three-storey building. Reception and multi-function performance and rehearsal space to the ground floor, offices to the first and second floors, and services provision throughout. Located on a side street close to King's Cross railway station, the design makes use of the hard landscape to the front of the venue, with full-height doors opening up, effectively extending the floor space and enabling the Invisible Dot to offer external dining.

To ensure that the venue could make use of the ground floor space outside of performance times, we developed a bespoke mobile bar joinery unit. Complete with its own drainage, beer taps and hand basin, the bar was configured into three separate elements to enable the individual pieces to fit perfectly in the stage box. Like all aspects of the design, including the sound and lighting gantry, the bar could be assembled and used by volunteers unfamiliar with the space. We worked closely with the Invisible Dot to develop a design that would appeal to their artist and audience alike, while meeting their strict budgetary constraints.
