Zijing Paradise Walk and Aoti Vanke Centre, both LWK + PARTNERS projects in Hangzhou, China, are recognised in German Design Award 2022 organised by German Design Council, one of the world’s leading voices for design and brand!

Both projects earned Special Mentions for their distinctive design aesthetics, functional mix and the ability to build strong communities supporting people’s wellbeing. The presentation ceremony will take place in Frankfurt, Germany in February 2022.

Aoti Vanke Centre, Hangzhou, China

  • Excellent Architecture – Architecture (Special Mention)

Designed by Ferdinand Cheung’s team, this innovative working hub creates a smart business and lifestyle community by featuring a reinvention of the podium-tower typology. Its ring-shaped podium is lifted off the ground to open up a central courtyard, disrupting the established norm in office architecture that the prime central spot should be occupied by tower lobbies. Each level of the elevated podium rotates by a different degree to achieve a stunning form and engaging pedestrian space.

  • Excellent Architecture – Retail Architecture (Special Mention)

This community shopping mall delivers a wellness-driven experience infused with local culture, capturing the elegance and conciseness of traditional Hui-style architecture with playful modern design language. Also the work of Ferdinand Cheung’s team, the project offers an interesting mix of volume and void with multiple cantilevering and shifting of forms. The shaved roofs mimic the iconic Hangzhou-style roof, while the silvery aluminium façades pay homage to rustic brickwork.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the German Design Awards is run by global design and brand authority German Design Council. The award recognises groundbreaking design achievements that provide answers to the challenges of our time and lead future design thinking.
