Theres no set rules to choosing the correct colour for your home. Everybody has a favourite colour, whether they realise it or not - just look at the colours you like wearing.
Look at a colour wheel to see which colours go with which - opposing colours on the wheel work well together and colours next to each other are harmonious.
Once you’ve selected your base colour think about which way the light comes into your home, is it North facing - if so, the light will tend to be cool and your room would benefit from warm tones to counteract the light.
Try and think of the overall colour scheme throughout your home - don’t jump from one dramatic colour in one room to another colour in another room or the overall scheme will be disjointed and the overall ambience will jar.
Several tricks can be used to help the room’s proportions, continuing the wall colour on to the doors and skirtings will make the room feel bigger. Painting a low ceiling the same colour as the walls will make it appear higher as the eye is tricked into believing that the walls continue upwards.
Always test any colour with a sample pot, take note of how the colour looks under different daylight through out the day. A colour that looks great in early afternoon light, may look duller in the morning.
Colour really does affect how we feel, red is a high energy colour - don’t use it in the bedroom or you’ll never sleep ! Although a yellow front door would be welcoming to come home to.
Changing your paint colour is relatively easy and cheap, so make sure that your expensive pieces of furniture such as a sofa are in relatively neutral colours.
