Our client had purchased this property around 5 years ago, it was designed with a traditional layout with two reception rooms, a dining room at the front of the house, and a kitchen/family room at the back. London interior design firm, LLI Design found that the family - a young professional couple and their two children; due to this layout seldom used up to 40% of the space. To start with we reconfigured the layout with the goal of attaining more practical living space.

We suggested that an open plan area would more suit the family and their needs whilst the two reception rooms became a study and a lounge. The new family living / kitchen / dining space was created by removing the wall between the old kitchen and dining room, allowing natural light to flood the area from both the front and rear of the property.

A dramatic 3.7m central island was installed in the kitchen wrapped in dove grey frosted glass and dramatically under lit by LED strips, the island houses practical features such as pop up sockets and a downdraft extractor. Greys were repeated in the palette of the family area, along with creams, blacks and reds. Flos Fuschia glass ceiling pendants hang in the dining area, over a granite table with upholstered slimline dining chairs.

Oranges, taupes and greys were used in the TV / lounge that sat adjacent to the family area, we specified American black walnut flooring to sit with the contemporary walnut veneered doors, some of which included glazed panels to allow more natural light to flow throughout.

The smaller reception room was redesigned into a study for the two children, with bright coloured Eames EA108 chairs, Arne Jacobsen AJ table lamps and plenty of storage. The downstairs toilet was transformed with large format floor and wall tiles, a wall hung basin and WC and mirror fronted cabinets on 2 walls.

The new open plan design, enhanced with features such as an intelligent lighting system, created a stylish yet highly practical family home for our clients’ to enjoy. The project recently received a Highly Commended award in the category of Interior Design Private Residence, South East UK in the  International Property Awards.
